This condition came as a complete surprise to me! The intention for this blog is to keep a record of this journey, work out how to heal as much as possible and to hopefully help and encourage others with the same condition.
At first I thought I had worn my beloved cowboy boots for too long one day-my hips and groin area were stiff and a little painful. It should go away in a day or two I thought. Instead, it kept getting worse and worse. I was at the beach on vacation with my family and so I thought walking on the beach would help, but no. I was able to drive home but sitting still and stopping frequently to walk a bit.
During the next few weeks, the pain spread. My legs felt like painful cement logs. I could sit fairly comfortably but inactivity had to be alternated with movement-the pain of standing up became challenging. I finally went to the doctor to see what was going on. By the time I had my appointment the pain had migrated to my arms and shoulders. I was unable to reach anything in my pantry or pick up anything that fell on the floor. I relied on one of those grabber things. (above)
I was very fortunate to have the doctor that I have-my daughter's doctor actually. After a number of blood tests she was able to diagnose my condition as Polymyalgia Rheumatica. Never heard of it! She prescribed 40 mgs of Prednisol and within hours after my first dose I was pain free. What a wonderful relief.
Today, after tapering down from 40 mgs to 15mg (since July 1) I am starting to taper down to 10 mgs. This is a bit scary. From my reading and correspondence with a special Facebook group I know that at this level things can get a bit dicey and flares are common. Starting today! Eeeek!

Great job, Nancy. I've never heard of this illness either. I'm glad you are starting to feel better.
